Been reading up on trapping lately and got curious—any older hunters here still setting traps? Would love to hear what you’ve used, what worked, and any tips you’d pass down.

Same here. Used to be my source of "Christmas money", and buying feed for the hunting dogs, and a little spending money once in a while, but that was back when fur prices were substantial.

Picture looks like some sort of snare! Those are pretty much a hit & miss setup, mostly miss.steel traps without jaws are more reliable. Just saying

Yes. Started trapping muskrat, raccoon, and mink at 7 years old. Added fox and bobcats a couple of years later. 60 years later and still trapping.

tip for the newbe trapping fox. if you come upon a fox that's teap smart he'll play with your sets.
reset the original dirt hole set and place another trap on the low side approach and cover with surrounding sod. the trap smart fox always approaches from the low side of the original set so they can dust of the pan.

I grew up making traps from old wooden milk boxes. Cut a hole for a door, fashion a swinging door that covers the hole with a wooden stop for it to swing behind. One bolt in a corner and prop it open w a stick tied to fishing line that ran thru the handle holes in the crate and across to a nail where it was tied off. Throw food inside and when the critter walked in it pulled the string and stick and the door slammed shut. I swear I caught the same raccoons, possums, skunks and squirrels 20 times each! I’d obviously let them go and do it again…

All depends on how you use them. I've got rabbits and some birds before. Even got a fish once using a snare. Placement is key.
