First-time RDR1 player… is it normal to be mauled by 7 bears in under a minute!?

Just started playing Red Dead Redemption 1 for the first time. WELL. I swear, this was the first time I’d even seen a bear in the game. I got swarmed. Ended up killing seven bears total. The seventh was far off so I sniped it, but still — I genuinely thought my game had bugged out or something. 😂 Is this just a normal day in Tall Trees? Or did I stumble into some kind of bear cult initiation 😂😂 P.S.
