Anyone know what these circles on the stairs are? I just spackled over them

I didn’t overthink it and just filled them in and moved on. My wife and I are expecting a baby very soon so I’ve been in full-on project mode. I just added spackle to make everything smooth. Is this OK? Will it crumble in the next five years? Because that would be terrible. #DIYProjects #HomeRenovation #StairsSafety #Home #HomeDecor

Cellulose insulation, they drill holes run a tube that’s connected to a long hose into the hole. The hose is connected to a insulation blowing machine like one from Lowes but much bigger and better quality, but they blow the insulation in those holes in areas that are inaccessible to put bat insulation or rolled insulation, (pink).

Should have used wood filler not spackle, spackle is for drywall it will crumble in less then a year

Old steps had bars that looked like handles. They held down a stair runner.

The holes are from stair clips. There used to hold the runner in place. It was something like in photo. Now it’s used more as decorative flair. Not foam insulation as that was not invented during that time period

Stair runner holder rods are typically fastened where the tread and riser meet in the back. Usually small clamps and screws...not a focal point. I doubt it was for lights, you'd be blinded going upstairs based on the size of holes. I'd say ventilation holes that had carpet over them. I wish all my tradesmen family members were still alive to ask for you.
