I stick to arrows for close shots and .308 with copper bullets out to 300 yards. Haven't tracked a single deer or antelope - they just drop. Clean kills, minimal meat loss, zero lead fragments. Here's the thing: if you need multiple shots to connect, or you're "walking rounds in," you're not a long-range hunter - you're just being unethical. That ego-driven "send it" mentality creates wounded animals and gives all hunters a bad reputation. Know your limits. Practice within them. The egos here are absurd. Nobody has a 100% one shot, immediate drop kill ratio. How did you get that skilled. Just innately born killers, BS. Stop making claims of perfection. It reeks of desperation.

all I know is that when I was 12 years old, in 1964, my grandfather gave me 2 cartridges for my Marlin 30-30 when we went deer hunting. I complained vehemently to no avail. he told me: make your 1st shot the killing shot, or don't shoot at all. I asked: then why give me 2 cartridges? he replied: even the best shooters are not perfect, so save that 2nd shot to put the poor animal out of it's misery after you have tracked the blood drops for 2 miles.

you would think so but I hunted with a guy ONCE that used an A.R .223 with a 30 round mag. and he would empty it at any deer he seen

If you put it through the heart, the deer will jump straight up and not run 10 yards before falling, and if you miss the head shot you may just take off part of the jaw and that’s a bad thing as you well know 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Most of my deer harvested have been under 25 yards....thrilling to let them get close and observe their mannerisms. Just behind the front shoulder for shot placement, 180 grain,30.06..few drop where they are shot,BUT most found in less than 100 yards

Very few of these so called long range shooters have the skills to make clean kills at extended ranges. You have to understand many factors such as wind ,temperature,barometric pressure,ect.. Stick to shooting targets at long ranges,but when it comes to living animals, stay within a one-shot one kill distance, which is probably 300 yards for most experienced hunters.Be ethical at all times.
