I thought I was being smart by shopping for a used car early this summer. Prices have dropped a lot since the crazy peak in 2022, but they are still higher than before the pandemic, so I figured timing would make a difference. Turns out, timing is everything and June is the worst month you can choose!!! Dealerships barely run any deals in June. The weather is nice, more people are out looking, and the new model year cars are still months away. They have no reason to lower prices. It is not just June either. April, May, and July are also bad. Those months line up with tax refund season, and a lot of people put that money toward a car, so demand stays high. Even the big holidays around that time do not help. Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Father’s Day, July 4th — you might see sales signs, but the discounts are not anything special. ‼️The best time to shop is the middle of winter. January is when dealers start clearing out older inventory to make room for the new model years, and you will see more real discounts. November through February is generally good, especially around Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, New Year’s, and Martin Luther King Day. Fewer people are shopping, the weather keeps many indoors, and dealers are much more willing to negotiate. If you are planning to buy a used car, keep an eye on the calendar.
