The world isn't really built for kids to move around in anymore. Fewer teens than ever are getting their driver's license, but some still need to drive. And that raises a big question. It raises the question of what kind of car you give a barely grown kid with an underdeveloped brain. In my opinion, the answer is a manual transmission. I gave my kids a 2000 Ford Escort with a stick shift and no radio. It forced them to focus on driving and feel the car without any distractions. It eventually died, but it taught my daughter a valuable skill. She now works at a dealership, and they have to pull her out of the office to move stick-shift cars because none of the salesmen can drive one. Contrast that with my first car, a rusty '68 Impala with a V8 engine. It had terrible handling and could do a burnout but not much else. It was a beast, but somehow I survived it.
