My Mom Says I Should Sell My Diamond and Ruby Set for Gold. Is She Right?

I have this beautiful ruby and diamond set that I was thinking about selling. It's in 18k white gold and weighs over 63 grams. A local jeweler just offered me around $8,000 for it. My mom has always told me that gemstones and diamonds are not a good investment. She thinks I should convert it to gold instead, so I was planning to sell the set and do just that. But when I told my husband about it, he was not happy at all. He said a good quality ruby is rare and that I would never be able to find a set like this at the same price I originally bought it for. Keep the set as it is and try to sell it to somebody that is interested in a fine piece of jewelry. You should be able to get at least two to three times the value of the gold weight.

Instead of accepting the value assigned to the set by a local jeweler, I'd take it for a professional appraisal. The value of rubies varies widely depending on several factors, including the color. Based on the photograph accompanying the article, that deep blood red color is the most sought after and the most valuable.
