Breaking Barriers: Judge Maryellen Hicks' Trailblazing Journey as Tarrant County's First Black Judge: In the heart of Fort Worth, Texas, a young Maryellen Hicks dreamed of justice from age five, inspired by her great-uncle W.J. Durham, who fought alongside Thurgood Marshall in the landmark Sweatt v. Painter case against racial segregation in law schools. Born March 10, 1949, into a military family that moved across states before settling in Odessa for her early education, Hicks faced the era's deep-seated racism and gender barriers head-on. Undeterred, she earned her B.A. from Texas Woman's University, then shattered history at Texas Tech School of Law, graduating in 1974 as its first Black female alumna— a feat amid widespread exclusion for women and minorities in legal education.Overcoming Early StrugglesLife wasn't easy; as a "novelty" Black female lawyer in Fort Worth, Hicks joined Bonner & Mitchell, handling diverse cases before co-founding Bonner & Hicks. Following her mother's call to engage—vote, volunteer—she campaigned for Mayor Hugh Parmer. At just 27, in 1978, she became Fort Worth's first African American and first woman Municipal Court Judge, rising to Chief Judge despite skepticism. These roles tested her amid personal risks, like threats from disturbed litigants in family court cases.Judicial Milestones Amid AdversityAppointed in 1982 by Governor Mark White to Tarrant County's 231st District Court, Hicks served a decade as its only Black female judge, specializing in family law and aiding vulnerable children. Tragedy struck nearby in 1991 when George Lott, from one of her cases, shot two appeals court justices—highlighting the dangers she navigated. Yet Governor Ann Richards elevated her in 1992 to the Texas Second Court of Appeals (1993-1994), making her its first Black and first female justice. Peers later ranked her #1 judge in Houston-area polls (1999, 2001), outshining even Supreme Court justices.Enduring LegacyPost. Story By Donnell Ballard

Gary Voices: Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson Gary has always been a basketball city. From the Eastside courts to the Westside, from Miller to Glen Park, basketball has lived in the parks, school gyms, and neighborhood courts where young players chased their hoop dreams. That environment helped shape one of Gary’s greatest basketball stories. Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson. Robinson grew up on Gary’s West Side, living right across the street from Roosevelt High School, with the Delaney area just down the street from his home. Like many players growing up in the city, he spent countless hours playing ball in the inner city, competing on neighborhood courts where the games were serious and the competition was real. Those early battles helped develop the skills that would eventually take him far beyond Gary. At Roosevelt High School, Robinson became one of the most dominant players in the state of Indiana. In a state where basketball is deeply rooted in the culture, he earned one of the highest honors a high school player can receive — Indiana Mr. Basketball. That same season, Robinson led Roosevelt High School to a state championship, bringing the title back home to Gary and securing his place in the city’s basketball legacy. From there, Robinson took his talents to Purdue University, where he quickly became one of the most unstoppable players in college basketball. His dominance on the court eventually led to the 1994 NBA Draft, where Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson was selected #1 overall. A kid from Gary. Built on inner-city courts. State champion at Roosevelt. Indiana Mr. Basketball. And the top pick in the NBA Draft. His journey remains one of the greatest basketball stories to come out of Gary. “Before the NBA spotlight, Glenn Big Dog Robinson was just another kid putting in work on Gary’s inner-city courts.” #GaryIndiana #GaryVoices #TheG #NorthwestIndiana #GI #RegionNews #GaryPride

NOT POLITICAL. 🛑 Stop Scrolling for 60 Seconds. Most of us are experts at "the grind" but beginners at knowing why we’re grinding. If you feel like you’re on a treadmill going nowhere, take this 3-question pulse check. 1. The "What": The Saturday Morning Test ☕ If you woke up tomorrow with zero chores, zero emails, and $500 in "fun money," where would you go? Who would you call? The Truth: Your answer isn't just a fantasy; it’s a map of what your soul is actually craving (Rest? Connection? Adventure?). 2. The "Why": The Value Filter 💎 Rank these three in order of importance to YOU (not your parents, your boss, or your followers): Freedom (Owning your time) Connection (Deepening your relationships) Impact (Helping others/Creating) The Truth: If "Freedom" is #1 but you're working 80 hours a week for a promotion you don't want, you aren't "succeeding"—you’re drifting. 3. The "How": The 15-Minute Rule ⏱️ We overestimate what we can do in a year, but underestimate what we can do in 15 minutes. The Challenge: What is one tiny thing you can do right now to reclaim your agency? Want to write? Write one paragraph. Want to be healthier? Drink a glass of water and walk around the block. Want a new career? Update your LinkedIn headline. The Bottom Line: You don't need a 10-year plan to start living better. You just need to be honest about what matters today. 👇 Drop a "HELL YES" in the comments if you're committing to one small change this week.
