I'm Pulling Out Chunks of Hair With a Strange Waxy Substance on the Roots. What Is This?!

I wash my hair a few times a week and brush it most days. I don't use any hair dye or products at all. I lose a lot of strands when I brush, but my hair is super thick and long so I always thought that was normal. The weird part is that twice in the last five months, I've been running my fingers through my hair and pulled out these strange clumps. It doesn't hurt when it happens. The roots of the hair are all attached by this dark orange, waxy substance, kind of like earwax. It's so gross but at the same time, I'm so confused. I'll keep combing and more chunks will come out until it just stops. I have no idea what this is.
