Chasing Heights, Missing the Point
I hiked to Tugela Falls because it’s the second tallest waterfall in the world. The stats sounded impressive—948 meters, South Africa’s Drakensberg, a view you’re supposed to remember forever.
But the truth? I barely remember the water. I remember the ache in my knees, the wind that made my jacket useless, the way my breath fogged up my phone camera. I remember thinking: if I stand here long enough, maybe I’ll feel something big.
Instead, it was just me, a thin mist, and the quiet disappointment of realizing that ticking off a bucket list doesn’t fill the empty parts. Sometimes, the view is just a view. And you’re still you, standing there, waiting for awe that doesn’t come.
