As a tail gunner on a TBF Avenger during WWII, my dad's 3 brushes with death

Three stories from one man -- three brushes with death. Here’s what happened. *** I’ll never forget from my dad, who served as a tail gunner on a TBF Avenger flying off the escort carrier USS Block Island during WWII. 🍂 The Sub, the Dive, and the Propeller On a mission near Gibraltar, his crew caught a German sub on the surface. As they dove in, my dad manned his twin 30 cals while the pilot opened fire. He watched crewmen on the U-boat scramble for their deck gun. Then came the return fire. A puff of smoke from the sub’s cannon—and suddenly, the plane shook violently. Somehow, they limped back to the carrier. When they got out, both swore the plane had taken a direct hit, but after checking top to bottom… no damage. Until the pilot pointed up at the propeller. A perfect half-moon chunk had been taken out. An inch or two in the wrong direction, and they might not have made it back. 🍂 The Rocket Mishap The Block Island was one of the first carriers to deploy anti-submarine rockets. One day, a mechanic was testing the system. The tail of the TBF was propped slightly higher than usual. He disconnected the rockets from one wing, connected the test system… and hit the button. Whoosh. A live rocket from the other wing launched straight into the carrier deck. The deck officer ran toward it, probably thinking he’d just yank it out. My dad saw this and decked him flat. A split-second later, someone threw a bucket of water on the still-glowing rocket, and steam shot 18 feet in the air. No one ever mentioned the incident again—except the mechanic. He got formally reprimanded. 🍂 The Mission That Never Returned One day before a flight, another gunner asked to swap places because he needed the hours for flight pay. My dad agreed. That plane never came back. PS: My dad's ship—the USS Block Island—was the only American aircraft carrier sunk in the Atlantic during WWII. #MilitaryLife #WWIIHistory #VeteranStories #MilitaryDad #FamilyStories #Fatherhood #FamilyFirst

What‘s the most interesting story you have heard about one of your family member?

I come from a large family, and one of my uncles-by-marriage was named Ora L. Hovies. He was always just "Ora L." to everyone, and I called him Uncle Orrie. The thing is, no one outside the immediate family ever seemed to know what that mysterious "L" stood for. He never told his middle name, keeping it a tightly held secret. The story behind his unique name is pretty wild. He was born on the west coast of Washington State, soon after his parents arrived in a covered wagon, having crossed the USA as pioneers. During her pregnancy, his mother was craving citrus like crazy – which, of course, was completely unavailable on their arduous journey across the country. So, when her little newborn boy arrived, she gave him a truly unusual moniker, a name inspired by the very food she had craved most. For years, only the family ever knew the full truth. That is - My Uncle Orrie's full given name was actually Orange Lemon Hovies. *** That's a fantastic family story about a name. I actually heard a similar one about a woman who named all her daughters after flowers—Violet, Daisy, and so on. When she finally had a boy, she called him Jonquil. #FamilyStories #FamilyHistory #UniqueNames #FamilyFirst #Family

Despite the broken relationship and all the chaos, I still have zero regrets about having a child

I have a son with a woman who once thought I was far wealthier than I actually was. Sadly that misunderstanding was not even the most difficult part of being with her. I tried to stay for my son’s sake but eventually it just was not possible. I switched to weekends only and when her drinking and smoking finally caught up with her I was able to take him full time when he was 9. Since then he has been the brightest part of my life. He is respectful, kind, and grateful for everything I do for him. He is 15 now and we have both the father and son relationship as well as a close friendship. If I had the power to design sons for everyone he is exactly what I would choose. I cannot imagine life without him. Nothing could ever make me regret being his father. It is the single best thing that has ever happened to me and I am thankful every day for it. Any other parents out there feel the same way about their kids. *** What a simple yet touching story. Be honest, have you ever regretted having children? #Parenting #ParentingJourney #Fatherhood #FamilyLife #Gratitude #LifeLessons #FamilyStories #FamilyRelationships #FamilyFirst

When did you realize your parents were bad parents?

I was in 4th grade, around nine years old. Our mom was picking us up from school that day, which was a rare change. As I walked up to the car, I saw the trunk tied shut with a rope and a weird numbness washed over me. I then listened to my mother brag all about how many beautiful plants, hanging baskets, and flowers she had just bought. She had new clothes while we were wearing hand-me-downs. We constantly had almost no groceries halfway through the week because she had run out of money, while she would buy lunch regularly at work. She had just spent her entire tax return on plants. She made enough money to easily support us, if only she had been capable of thinking about anything beyond her own instant gratification. That was the moment I realized who my mother really was. At just nine years old, I understood that I was more of an adult than she was capable of being. 😮‍💨 I'm curious if anyone else has a similar story. #Parenting #FamilyRelationships #FamilyStories #ChildhoodMemories #PersonalGrowth #LifeLessons #AdulthoodTruths

The Surprising Reason My Toddler Refuses to Wear Shorts

Today I finally uncovered why my 3-year-old has been so hesitant to wear shorts, even as the weather warms up. After a gentle conversation, he admitted he’s scared his knees will get hurt without the protection of long pants. It broke my heart a little, realizing how such a small detail can feel so big to him. As parents, we sometimes forget how the world can seem overwhelming to our little ones. I reassured him that it’s okay to feel nervous and that I’ll always be there to help him feel safe, no matter what he wears. Have you ever discovered a surprising reason behind your child’s fears?
