Timeshare trap: our costly lesson
Last spring, my wife and I decided to chase a so-called travel hack: attending a timeshare presentation for the promise of a cheap vacation. We’d always heard these pitches were aggressive, but we thought we were too savvy to fall for any tricks. The deal seemed simple—pay $300 in 'taxes & fees,' sit through a sales pitch, and walk away with two flight vouchers and a weeklong condo stay. Easy, right?
The reality was a nightmare. From the moment we arrived, the staff treated us like royalty—until we made it clear we weren’t buying. The salespeople turned cold, even hostile. The three-hour presentation dragged on, with constant pressure and guilt-tripping. When we finally escaped, exhausted, we were handed our 'rewards.'
Here’s the catch: the vouchers and condo stay came with hidden fees. The $300 only covered the initial hotel. To actually use the flight vouchers, we had to pay another $150 per ticket in 'processing fees.' The condo stay? More 'resort fees'—another $400. And the available dates were so limited, it was nearly impossible to book anything decent.
We felt cheated, angry, and embarrassed. The beautiful beach views and luxury condos they showed us were just bait. The real experience was a web of fine print and empty promises. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone—unless you enjoy being lied to and wasting your time. The travel industry’s dirty secret is that these 'free' vacations are anything but. If you value your sanity, steer clear.
