How to Survive the Staten Island Ferry (and Why You’d Even Try)
The Staten Island Ferry is free, but nothing in New York is ever simple. If you’re driving, pay for a lot—street parking is a myth. St. George has $8 spots if you’re early, but Whitehall’s closest garage will bleed you for $40.
Rush hour means more boats, but also more elbows. Off-peak is quieter, but you’ll wait. The ride itself is 25 minutes, but budget 90—missing a return means standing in a line that feels like a punishment for optimism.
Board from Manhattan or Staten Island; both are easy by subway or bus. Don’t bother with a car—no vehicles allowed. MetroCard is your friend, but SingleRide tickets exist if you like paying more for less.
Once on board, ignore the tourists fighting for the Statue of Liberty shot. The best view is on the starboard deck, but you’ll be jostled. If you want peace, grab a coffee inside and watch the skyline through scratched windows.
You can’t get off at the Statue. You can buy a $3 beer, though. And when the boat docks, move fast—New Yorkers don’t wait for anyone, not even you.
