Note to hikers! Summer mosquito bites to the extent of the palm of the hand

Summer outdoor natural scenery beautiful to the breathtaking, but mosquitoes are also really hospitable! Two days ago I went hiking in the mountains, not long after I got off the car, arms and legs can still understand, actually even the palm of the hand were bitten a square! Really recommend that we must be prepared before departure anti-mosquito equipment, otherwise the trip directly “crazy” opening! Crowded fishing spots? Hard pass unless...

Look, I get it - we all want to catch fish. But packed fishing spots just aren't my vibe unless there's something epic happening (like those insane salmon runs in remote Alaska streams). Hit a stocked trout lake on ice opener in MN once. Limited out and had fun, but only because I was learning something new. Give me a quiet spring day catfishing with a book, hauling in 10-40lb fighters. Or even better - paddling solo to a crystal-clear mountain lake in Alaska, catching small trout and cooking them over a campfire with just salt. Pure heaven, especially with someone you care about. Leeches, Cliffs, and Lost Hikers: A Harsh Reminder

Always keeping an eye on hiking safety stories from around the world—and just came across another heartbreaking reminder of how unforgiving nature can be. A 20-year-old college student went missing 8 days ago while hiking in Lijiang, China, in an undeveloped, remote area. After 5 days and nights of intense search and rescue, her body was found—believed to have fallen off a cliff after passing through a leech-infested zone known as Ma Huan Ba. 🌲 This area was unmapped and full of hazards: thick forest, dangerous cliffs, and swarms of aggressive land leeches that clung to rescuers by the dozens. Even trained search dogs were badly bitten, with bleeding wounds—including around the eyes. No protection gear = full exposure. Locals shared some wild firsthand knowledge: “That soft pattering sound in the forest? Not rain—it's land leeches dropping from trees after smelling you. But hey, don’t panic—they’re not aggressive… they just want a little of your blood and then they leave. Real polite.” “I’m from Yunnan, near the Ailao Mountains. Back then, even just getting near the woods, leeches would swarm you instantly. You could literally hear them crawling toward you.” “Forget water leeches—land leeches are way scarier. They jump. Trapped in Yosemite—Saved by Satellite SOS

Not my story, but I just came across this post and had to share it. It’s a wild reminder that even “prepared” hikers can run into real danger when nature decides to test you. 🌨️🌊 Two hikers planned a scenic trek from MTJ Trailhead to Tenaya Lake, skipping Half Dome (no permit). They checked the weather, packed food, emergency blankets, extra power… everything seemed under control. The trail up to Clouds Rest was snow-free, but beyond that—knee-deep snow and hidden streams under a melting snowpack (hello spring in the Sierras 😬). They pushed on, thinking it’d clear as they descended… 🌅 By 7PM they were racing the sunset down snowy slopes, less than 3km from the road—when suddenly: flooded rivers everywhere. Fast water, no bridges, darkness closing in. No safe way forward. 🥶 They stopped, layered up with emergency blankets, ate to stay warm, and started using iPhone SOS to find a satellite signal. At 9:45PM they got a message out. At 1AM, two badass rangers showed up. Led them through three icy river crossings (one up to the thighs!), and brought them out safely. Gave them sleeping bags and even drove them back to their car the next day. First time rock climbing, scared to death 😓

Declaration: I lack experience and adequate preparation for this rock climbing trip! Not worth learning from! Don't imitate! I won't play like this anymore in the future! I came for an "outdoor trek" with my friends. I thought it would be a normal climbing hike, but it turned out to be unprotected bare-handed rock climbing right from the start. Bay Area Weekend | Exploring Shady Trails and Marveling at Giant Stones

This past sunny and partly cloudy Saturday, we headed over to the Redwood Forest Reserve, El Corte De Madera Creek Open Space Preserve, located close to Redwood City. The majestic redwood trees provide lots of shade, with the most stunning feature being the layered sandstone landscape and the Tafoni sandstone - a large rock created through millions of years of formation. The journey from the South Bay was breathtakingly beautiful, with the road winding through the woods, a particular stretch overlooking the Bay Area on one side and the sea on the other. 🎫 Admission is free, but visitors need to cross the road from the car park to reach the Preserve. The road is flanked by tall trees, contributing to a beautiful sight. Beware of the fast-driving cars while crossing the road, especially if you're with kids. 👉✅Tafoni Trail: This is a 4.3-mile loop with shaded paths covering over 90% of the route. We ensured we applied sunscreen despite the shadow. The elevation changes were subtle, making it a relaxing walk of about 2.5 hours. Both sides of the trail are adorned by dense redwoods with the rustling of pine trees and flowing streams for company. The lush clovers and blooming tiny blue wildflowers were a sight to behold. 👉🪨Tafoni Sandstone: Located along the Tafoni trail, a short detour allows you to see the Tafoni Sandstone up close from a viewpoint. 'Tafoni' is an Italian word meaning 'caves.' Millions of years ago, this rock was formed underwater due to tectonic activity. Its primary component is calcium carbonate, and rainwater would easily seep into the rock cracks, causing weathering over time, thus creating numerous honeycomb-like caves on the stone - a masterpiece of nature. 👀 Sun protection is advised. On hot days, the trails might swarm with non-biting flies. The trail wasn't overly crowded. We crossed paths with cyclists and families enjoying the space.
