Why I chose bird dogs over bow hunting

Tried bow hunting but sitting still while ducks flew overhead and pheasants cackled nearby drove me crazy. Can usually tag out opening day of gun season anyway, which happens after duck season closes. Trading action-packed mornings with my dog and buddies for hours of silent waiting just doesn't appeal to me anymore. My family only eats so many deer per year, and I'd rather spend those prime hunting hours chasing birds with good company and watching dogs work. Maybe when I retire I'll have time for both. Let’s be honest—hunting isn’t exactly “cheap meat.” Between tags, gas, gear, and time, it adds up fast. I don’t know anyone who hunts solely to save money. Most of us do it for the experience, knowing where our meat comes from, and the satisfaction of doing it ourselves. Sure, if you’ve got land or a farmer buddy and use the same old rifle, you might save some—but for most of us, it's far from freezers full of budget meat. Still… I wouldn’t trade it. Almost had my first public land buck!

Year 2 of self-taught public land hunting in Ohio and I'm still learning the hard way! Spent most of last season sitting 1.5+ miles from the car, sunrise to noon routine. Saw deer 3 times but never close enough for a shot. Then at 10am while just scouting near a pond, a shooter buck comes GALLOPING past me at 10 yards! I'm fumbling with shells, following his trail around the pond... and end up scaring off a rabbit and some doves instead 😅 3 more hours of walking = nothing. Mule deer turned me into a real hunter

Grew up hunting big woods whitetails in Eastern forests - tracking through endless hardwoods was my passion. When I moved to Montana, I honestly looked down on mule deer. Saw them casually grazing by the river like livestock and thought they'd be boring compared to my crafty Eastern bucks. Boy was I wrong. First season hunting muleys completely changed me as a hunter. These aren't your backyard deer - they migrate 50+ miles, deal with mountain lions daily, and vanish into terrain that'll test everything you've got. No tree stands or trail cams here, just boots, glass, and pure hunting instinct. Now when I see whitetails, I barely glance their way.
