The Hike Was Harder Than Us
I thought the hardest part would be the altitude, or maybe the cold. But it was watching her—my girlfriend, city-raised, all nerves and new boots—try to pretend she wasn’t struggling. I kept asking if she was okay. She kept saying yes.
Halfway up, she stopped talking. I wanted to turn back, but she just kept walking, silent, stubborn. That night, in the tent, she admitted she’d almost cried. I admitted I had too.
We’re already planning the next one. Not because it was easy, but because we made it through, together, and neither of us had to pretend by the end.
