Definitely a safety net, definitely abused and frauded probably beyond belief. My son, 43, who worked and paid into the “system “ since 16 yrs. of age got an autoimmune disease (PMR) last year (Oct) and was unable to work or care for himself. My wife and I was his only source of support. He tried everything available and received nothing. Just this last Sept. he was approved for $24.00 (snap ) a MONTH. This month he was well enough ( that’s another story)to go back to work…. Thank God . Moral of the story, difficult to get any assistance WHEN you really need it. NOW, if he had been an illegal, a single mother with kids ( more the better) the help was limitless… “ what can we do for you”? I do want to commend Amgen, who approved him for very very expensive medication at no charge, it was a God send and got him to where he is today, health wise. It is SAD and unbelievable that there are 42 million people ( can’t say Americans) on government assistance…! You don’t think there are some scammers??? #SNAPBenefits #SNAPLife #SNAPTalk

As a former DWS worker for my state, I’ve seen those who need so much help and I’ve seen those who abuse the help they receive. I liken it to the the same concept the founding fathers had as they drafted our criminal justice system. It would be better to let 100 guilty to go free than 1 innocent man be convicted. Now we all know that’s not our reality. But the concept is real. So I applied that to the recipients. If all of the legal requirements were met citizenship requirements, household income etc then it is better to make sure that no child is left hungry. Regardless of any suspicion I may have. I turned any reasonable suspicion of fraud to our fraud department and let them handle it and moved on with my job. But then I look at my brother who is wheelchair bound and severely disabled he lived with me until last year when I was unable to handle his physical needs in my home and placed him in an assisted living facility. Prior to him living with me he lived on Social Security and SSI and Food stamps his food stamps were $ 16 a month. I had to buy him groceries as he didn’t have enough money to eat each month. In 2009 I moved him in with me as it was in his best interest, not mine. That’s a ridiculous injustice as not every disabled person has a family to back them up. #SNAPBenefits #SNAPLife #SNAPTalk

SNAP-Benefits with responsibilities

While I see SNAP benefits as absolutely essential for survival in some cases, I see them too often used and abused as a substitute for exercising adult responsibilities. Primarily, if you are a SNAP recipient, you should ONLY be using those funds to buy essentials for cooking real meals. People on SNAP seem to universally own iPhone(s). Go to the grocery store. Buy Flour, Sugar, Rice, Beans, multiple spices, canned vegetables and meats (chicken, tuna, etc.), yeast, etc. Use your iPhone to search recipes and learn to cook. Cook large quantities of one pot meals. Divide them up and freeze separate meals for later. Learn to make bread and tortillas and candy and cake from scratch. You would be amazed at how far your SNAP benefits will stretch. This is how those funds were intended to be used. Stock up those cupboards and pantries, then go get a job and get off of SNAP. It was intended to be a lifeline NOT life LONG. #SNAPBenefits #SNAPLife #SNAPTalk
