Yet right now (and every year from late February to early June), the distance to Earth is actually decreasing — by millions of miles! Why? Earth orbits the Sun at a blistering 67,000 mph — much faster than the Voyagers. As our planet swings around to the same side of the Sun as the probes, we’re catching up to them. For example, Voyager 2 is shrinking its distance by about 0.69 AU (nearly 65 million miles) between February and June 2026. By early June, it will be closer than it was in February! Once Earth passes and heads the other way, the distance will start growing again — forever. Our tiny blue planet is still playing cosmic catch-up with its distant robotic ambassadors. What do you find more amazing — that the Voyagers are still communicating after 50 years, or that Earth can “catch up” to them every year? Jessica Hodge+FollowEarth’s Close Sun Encounter Is Coming!Earth’s about to hit perihelion—aka our closest point to the sun—on January 3, 2026! Even though we’re nearly 5 million km closer than in July, it doesn’t mean we’ll feel any warmer (thanks, axial tilt). The sun looks a tiny bit bigger, but you probably won’t notice. It’s just a cool reminder that our planet’s orbit isn’t a perfect circle. Anyone else love these cosmic milestones? #Science #Perihelion #SpaceFacts31Share
Patrick Simmons+FollowEarth’s Air Is Sneaking Onto the Moon?!Turns out, Earth’s atmosphere is literally leaking onto the Moon! Scientists just found that our planet’s magnetic field is funneling atmospheric particles all the way to the lunar surface. That means the Moon’s dusty surface is sprinkled with bits of Earth’s air—like a cosmic time capsule. Who knew the Moon’s been collecting our leftovers for billions of years? Next time you look up, just remember: the Moon’s got a little piece of home! #Science #SpaceFacts #EarthToMoon00Share
James Brady+FollowMars Time Is Literally Faster Than Earth!Did you know time actually ticks faster on Mars? Scientists just figured out that a clock on Mars runs 477 microseconds faster per day than on Earth, and the difference can swing even more depending on where Mars is in its orbit. It’s all thanks to the wild gravitational tug-of-war between Mars, the Sun, Earth, and even our Moon. The catch? If you ever move to Mars, you’ll age a whole nine seconds more every 50 years. Not quite Interstellar, but still kinda trippy! #Science #Mars #SpaceFacts90Share
