Romania Was Never on My List—It Should’ve Been

Transylvania sounded like a punchline until I actually went. Everyone talks about Paris, Prague, or Rome, but nobody warns you how Romania sneaks up on you. It’s not the castles or the Dracula stuff. It’s the way the Carpathians look at dusk, or how a local in Sibiu hands you bread with a shrug, like you’re already family. I wandered through villages where time felt stuck, but the people weren’t. I didn’t plan to stay long. I did anyway. Romania isn’t loud about what it offers. Maybe that’s why it gets under your skin.
