hiking with my daughter: the ups, downs, and a little weight loss
Last weekend, my daughter and I set out for Holley Falls in Dawsonville, Georgia. I’ll be honest—I was a little nervous because, on our last few hikes, she’d always end up way ahead of me, and I’d be left huffing and puffing, wondering if I’d ever catch up. This time, though, I kept her in sight the whole way. Maybe she slowed down for me, or maybe I’m finally getting the hang of this hiking thing.
The falls were beautiful, and the sound of the water made all the sweating and sore knees worth it. But here’s the funny part: while I was busy admiring the scenery and feeling proud of myself for not getting lost, my daughter kept stopping to take pictures of every squirrel and wildflower. I kept thinking, are we here to hike or to start a nature photography business?
I’ve lost 10 pounds since we started these hikes, which is more than I ever managed with any gym membership. But I can’t help but wonder—does anyone else feel like their kids have endless energy, while we’re just trying to keep up? And is it normal to feel both proud and a little annoyed when your child is waiting for you at the top of every hill?
