Somewhat of a rough Sunday morning. I went out for a walk and ran into a friend who told me his wife had thrown him out. She threw him out because he’s a slob. He’s a slob because he’s a drug addict. He gets high, makes a mess, and spends all their money. I asked him if it was worth it. He said no, not really. Then he told me drugs aren’t the problem. People are the problem. Here’s a man who’s been thrown out by his wife, is about to live on the street, and still won’t admit what the problem is. Anyone who has homeless friends or tries to help the homeless sees this all the time. I once had a man tell me he was a functioning addict. He had a job. He had a place to live. He also lived on the streets for two years. They will not blame their best friend. That’s what’s infuriating. A lot of people look at the homeless and say get a job, you bum. What they should be saying is go to mental health services. Go to rehab. That’s where most of them need to go. Not everyone out there has these problems, but the ones who don’t usually get off the streets pretty quickly. Unless the streets give them those problems, which I’ve seen happen too. I brought him something to eat and a blanket. I told him I’d talk to his wife and see what could be done. I’m going to try to get him into rehab if he wants it and see what she’s willing to do. That was my Sunday morning. #Homelessness #HomelessIssues https://sewermeetsthesea.substack.com

Why Homelessness Is Getting Worse in America

#Homelessness has gotten dramatically worse because the country has absorbed millions of illegal immigrants in a very short period of time. Housing is not unlimited. Low income housing, shelters, and emergency services are finite resources. When millions of new people enter the country illegally, they compete directly with poor Americans, veterans, and working class families for the same apartments, the same shelters, and the same public assistance. Basic supply and demand applies. More people chasing the same limited housing drives rents up and pushes the poorest people out first. Cities then divert taxpayer money toward housing, food, and medical care for illegal immigrants, leaving fewer resources for citizens who are already struggling. This is not about blaming individuals. It is about acknowledging reality. You cannot import millions of people without consequences, and one of those consequences is a sharp increase in homelessness among Americans who were already on the edge.

“‘I’d Rather Sleep on Concrete’: Fort Worth Man Explains Why He Won’t Go to Homeless Shelters: Fort Worth leaders say they are investing more money in shelters and housing to tackle homelessness, but people like Tony Davis say the streets still feel safer than the system. Davis told me he has been homeless in Fort Worth for about 15 years and refuses to sleep in local shelters because he worries about bed bugs, theft, and his personal safety. When outreach teams point to open beds, Tony shakes his head and lays down on the sidewalk instead, saying he would rather face the night air than close his eyes in a place he do not trust.
