Your sunroof is a ticking time bomb and you don't even know it

I had no idea this was a thing until it happened to me. The drains in your car’s sunroof can get clogged with leaves and dirt. And when that happens, the water has nowhere to go but inside your car. I am talking about a complete disaster. Water can leak all over your seats, short out your electronics, and ruin your interior. It is an absolute nightmare that costs a ton of money to fix. Turns out, you can prevent this whole thing. It is a super easy DIY fix. You just need to check your sunroof drains once a year and clean them out with a vacuum or a brush. it's far better to blow them out with an air compressor because the drain tubes channel down to a rubber valve. I then spray a little wd40 in each of the drain tubes and then blow it out again. this helps keep the tubing clean and prevents cracking.

i had a 1996 pathfinder that the sunroof worked fine. i sold it at 479,345 k miles. Keep the sunroof clean by opening and cleaning, apply silicone to gaskets when they get dry, inspect the gaskets as they can come loose over time and dont neglect needed repairs.

Mine ended up with a bit of a different problem. I have a 2007 Didge Nitro with a custom sunroof and 2 years ago, as I was traveling down the highway, it sounded like a shotgun went off, and suddenly, I had a permanent sunroof without the roof. Thank God nobody was driving behind me. The glass shattered all over the highway, and the inside cover was sucked right out. Strangest thing that's ever happened to me in a car. My insurance agent was astounded, but not as much as the guy I talked to at the Dodge dealership lol. He said, "I have to say I thought I'd heard it all, but I guess I can still be surprised." I just laughed and said, "You should have been the one driving."

The problem goes beyond the drain tubes. The reduction rips / tears the seals. Expensive to replace components and usually parts are sold separately. The problem keeps coming back. I’ve had 2 cars and I just decided the best thing to do was very nearly and tactfully was to just silicone it off. I did exactly that and the headaches are gone. I will never have another vehicle with a sun roof ever again. They are a true disaster!

I had a little 2010 Ford focus that had a sunroof that opened all the way or tilted up a few inches. I always had it tilted open. I live in hot west Texas and it helped it not be as hot inside. I never had any problems with it at all.
