Just found out our breaker has been powering neighbor’s garage for decades. Landlord nextdoor says it’s not their problem. What now?

We bought half of a 100-year-old duplex last year. Everything was great until about two months after moving in, when I noticed a few breakers in our panel didn’t power anything in our unit. I flipped them off. And our neighbors showed up wondering why their garage had no electricity. Turns out, one of their breakers is in our panel and has been powering their garage for who knows how many years Even worse, their wiring is undersized for the breaker, so it’s not even safe. Thankfully the tenants only use it for the garage door and charging a leaf blower battery. So, at that moment, and not to brag, I generously left it on while I texted their landlord. No response. Today they finally replied after I brought it up again. They said they were told it’s been like this for so long that they don’t have to change it, and that she doesn’t have the money right now. Basically, she’s fine with us continuing to supply their power indefinitely. I’d like to keep a good relationship with the neighbors, but this has got to be total bullshit, right? It just feels wrong and potentially dangerous. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? #HomeOwnership #ElectricianLife #DuplexLiving #LandlordIssues #NeighborDrama #NeighborProblems #Home

My boyfriend and I bought a house together, and his father wanted to add his name to the house😠

My boyfriend (25M) and I (25F) bought a house together, splitting everything 50/50. But suddenly, his dad wants to be added to the deed. No heads-up, just a lawyer calling me out of the blue. Apparently, I agreed to this months ago? News to me! 😤 His dad’s always dangling money and favors, but there are always strings attached. He even tried to decide where to plant a tree in our yard, ignoring my opinion completely. My boyfriend just goes along with it, and when I push back, I’m accused of being controlling—or worse, cheating. Am I crazy for wanting a say in MY house? Is it wrong to feel uneasy about this? I need real advice—because right now, I feel like I’m being gaslit in my own home. Help! 🤯🏡 #RelationshipDrama #FinancialConflicts #TrustIssues #HomeOwnership #RomanticRelationships

If someone offered 1.5–2 times the market value of your home, would you sell?

Let’s pretend someone knocks on your door and says they will pay you way over market value for your home. I’m talking fifty to a hundred percent more than what it's worth, all in cash, right now. If your place is worth half a million, they are handing you between seven hundred fifty thousand and a million. Would you take it? What might hold you back could be that it's too hard to find another place, or maybe emotional or family ties to the house. And TBH, I have one of those houses people seem to want. For more than twenty years, strangers have shown up at my door asking if I’d sell. 😅 One day I finally told a woman it would take 5.1 million. Word must have spread because a neighbor walking her dog later stopped and told me I was being ridiculous and asked if I really thought someone would pay that. That was the point! Since then, the knocks have slowed to almost none. #RealEstate #HomeOwnership #PropertyMarket #HousingMarket #Decisions #MoneyTalk #Home

Landscaper hit me with a $12k invoice I can't pay 😵

As a new homeowner, I’m still learning the cost of landscaping. Last year, a landscaper did about $1,200 of work for me. He disappeared for months, then reappeared in March with a late invoice, which I paid. This spring, he did some cleanup, and in June we agreed—verbally—that he’d do more work: weeding, pruning, brush removal, trimming, mulch, and maybe a few plants. He mentioned boxwoods at $40 each and said he’d throw in some junipers. I thought we had a rough understanding of the cost. Instead, he showed up with a bunch of plants - junipers, boxwoods, spiraeas, hydrangeas, and two small Japanese maples - and did the work. I kept asking for receipts and an invoice. After two months, he finally sent one, and I was shocked. Nearly every line was marked up. Labor went from $55 to $60 an hour without warning. Yard-waste removal jumped from $100 to $300. Mulch was hundreds more than we’d discussed. The maples were listed at $1,300 each, even though they’re tiny—way above market rate. I went to a reputable nursery to compare prices, and nothing he planted matches the cost he’s charging 😓😮‍💨😩 especially the maples. I’m considering asking him to honor last year’s labor and disposal rates, correct the mulch pricing, and take back the maples and boxwoods. I’d keep the rest and pay for removal if needed. But I don’t know how realistic that is or whether he’ll even listen. 😫 #Homeownership #Landscaping #ContractorIssues #Home
