why does my sweet kid freeze up around my boyfriend ?

I’m really struggling and could use some advice. I’ve been dating my boyfriend for about a year, and I genuinely care about him. The problem is my six-year-old son just doesn’t seem to warm up to him at all. He gets quiet and distant whenever my boyfriend is around, even though my boyfriend tries to be friendly and patient. My friends and family keep telling me I should end things, but I’m not sure that’s the answer. I love my son and want him to feel safe, but I also don’t want to give up on someone who’s been good to me. I’m torn between my heart and what everyone else thinks is best. Has anyone else been through this? How did you help your child adjust? Am I missing something obvious here?
